What is the Gnutella worm?
Also known as W32/Gnuman.worm and Mandragore, the Gnutellaworm only affects users of the Gnutella application, whichis a file-sharing technology.
To become infected, you make a request for a file, to which the wormresponds. It poses as an ordinary requested media file, but in realityit is a .exe file. When you run the .exefile, it copies itself into the Gnutella program folder. It modifiesthe gnutella.ini file to accept .vbs files,copies 23 Trojan files to the Gnutella download directory, and thendeletes itself. The Trojan files cloak themselves to always appear asan answer to a request whenever you search for files on the infectedcomputer. For example, if you search an infected computer for a songwith the word 'sunrise' in it, the computer will respond to therequest with an infected file called sunrise.exe. Theworm also creates a text file on your hard drive called Yetanother GWV!(clientidxxx).zip (where xxx is anumber).
How to avoid the Gnutella worm
The Gnutella worm has a consistent size of 8,192 bytes,which makes it easy to spot and thus avoid. Other tips for avoidingthe worm are:
- Turn off Windows Scripting Host.
- Don't open
.vbsfiles. - If you have antivirus software, keep it updated and scan yourcomputer regularly. How to remove the Gnutella worm
If you have an updated version of NAV, it will remove theworm. Alternatively, you may follow these instructions:
- From within your Gnutella directory, delete the file titled
Yet another GWV!(clientidxxx).zip(wherexxxis a number). - Still within the Gnutella directory, delete all occurrences offiles with a
.vbsextension. - Launch Gnutella and check the directories that you share. Theworm adds the Gnutella directory to this list, so you will need todelete this directory from the list.
- Check out the file extensions list, and remove all occurrences of
.vbsfiles.

The threat from this worm is considered mild, as it isn't maliciousand only takes up extra system resources. Also, removal is consideredeasy. MP3 Torpedo is a fork of the very popular LimeWire Gnutella client. The purpose of MP3 Torpedo is to keep and maintain the freedoms that LimeWire may be forced to withdraw.LimeWire has been considering an alternative path to keep them out of any legal situations they could be forced into. From what we understand, LimeWire intends to implement a DRM filtering technology into their client.
If LimeWire ever decides to implement this DRM technology, we will be prepared to remove it from our code and distribute the client under our own branding.However, we will continue supporting the LimeWire client development. MP3 Torpedo, although very much like LimeWire, will never offer a paid version or a subscription service for the download or use of the MP3 Torpedo application.
